U.S. News: Mass. immigration raid strands workers' children

Immigration officials' arrest of 327 suspected undocumented Massachusetts workers has left about 100 children stranded with caretakers, said social workers who continue to learn of infants left behind. Gov. Deval Patrick worried children of the mostly female Guatemalan and El Salvadoran workers at Michael Bianco Inc., a military contractor, lack proper care, and the parents may fear disclosing the existence or whereabouts of their children.

Investigators say plant management mistreated workers, imposing onerous fines on them, such as $20 for talking at work or spending over 2 minutes in the bathroom. The company has more than $90 million in US military contracts.
